"Stratford Canning, cousin of the statesman George Canning, had been first secretary of the British Embassy in Constantinople under Robert Adair, the Ambassador, while Byron was there. When Adair left for England on the ship that took Byron back to Greece, Canning became head of the Embassy without being named Ambassador."
